If you are handling your own disposal in Terre Haute — or you just want to understand where your junk ends up when we haul it — it helps to know how the Vigo County waste system is put together. This guide covers the landfill, the county solid-waste programs, recycling, and the special channels for items that cannot go in the regular trash. Always call ahead to confirm hours and fees, which change.

Sycamore Ridge Landfill (Pimento)

The regional landfill serving the Terre Haute area is Sycamore Ridge Landfill, located at 5621 E. Cottom Drive in Pimento, just south of Terre Haute in Vigo County. It is owned and operated by Republic Services and is the non-hazardous solid-waste disposal site where most local trash ultimately goes. Landfills charge tipping fees — typically by weight or by load — and have rules about what they will and will not accept. If you plan to self-haul, call the facility first to confirm current public drop-off policies, hours, accepted materials, and fees before you drive out.

Vigo County Solid Waste Management District

The Vigo County Solid Waste Management District is the county's hub for recycling and special-waste programs. It is located at 3230 E. Haythorne Avenue, Terre Haute, and can be reached at (812) 231-4451. The District is funded through tipping fees from Sycamore Ridge Landfill and runs a range of resident services:

• Single-stream recycling — the District operates recycling drop-off, historically including a site in the South/Industrial Park area, accepting cans, cartons, mixed paper, cardboard, and #1, #2, and #5 plastics.
• Electronic recycling — scheduled e-waste collection accepting computers, monitors, TVs, phones, stereos, and more (most items free; a TV recently carried about a $20 fee).
• Tox Away days — periodic household hazardous waste collections for oil-based paint, chemicals, motor oil, and similar items.
• Yard waste guidance and periodic county cleanup events.

Because many of these run as scheduled events rather than everyday drop-off, check the District's calendar or call before you go.

Curbside trash & recycling

Household curbside collection in the Terre Haute area is provided by Republic Services and other haulers, depending on where you live. They handle weekly trash and recycling and typically offer bulk or large-item pickup for oversized items on a scheduled basis, sometimes for an added fee. Check with your specific hauler for your pickup day and their bulk-item rules.

City-Wide Large Item Cleanup

The City of Terre Haute periodically hosts a City-Wide Large Item Cleanup, giving residents designated drop-off sites for large household items — furniture, mattresses, large toys, grills, and similar bulky goods. City residency is verified and hazardous waste is not accepted. It is a great low-cost option for big items if the timing lines up; watch the City's site for the next event.

Construction & demolition debris

Remodeling and building projects generate their own waste stream — drywall, lumber, shingles, concrete, tile, and fixtures. Some of this is heavy enough that landfills price it by weight, and clean loads of certain materials (concrete, clean wood, metal) can sometimes be diverted to recyclers instead of buried. If you are doing a renovation, keep C&D debris separate from household trash where you can; it makes disposal cheaper and recycling possible.
